Description

It is important to measure whether or not students have met the learning outcomes that you have communicated to them at the beginning of a unit or course. In this workshop, we will explore the different types of assessments that can be used in the classroom and their purposes. We will also discuss the importance of course alignment and feedback. This workshop is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, it is a requirement for completion of the University Teaching Foundations (UTF) Certificate, and also supports the ASPIRE program.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and describe the three categories of assessment that can be used in the classroom (diagnostic, formative, and summative)
  • Explore the various purposes of assessment and how you can apply assessment in your classroom to help your students achieve intended learning outcomes
  • Identify the components of a well-designed assessment tool and relate assessment design to the concept of course alignment
  • Examine educational literature to gain an appreciation of the benefits of incorporating practice opportunities for students prior to formal assessment
  • Examine the concept of student motivation in relation to assessment design
  • Identify the characteristics of quality feedback and practice providing quality feedback
